Fuse Box to Breaker Panel Changes in Dartmouth & HRM

Replacing a fuse panel with a modern breaker panel is the work Home Style Electric is best known for. Jamie Myatt is a red seal journeyman electrician working out of Dartmouth, and a good deal of the housing here still has the panel it was built with in the sixties or seventies.

Will my insurance company cover a house with a fuse box?

Some will, many will not, and a growing number will write the policy only on condition the panel is replaced within a set window. It is one of the first things an insurer asks about on an older house, along with aluminum wiring, the age of the roof and the oil tank. If yours has raised it in writing, that letter usually tells you the deadline you are working to.

Insurers are not reacting to fuses being inherently dangerous. They are reacting to what a fuse panel usually means: a service sized for a 1965 household, decades of additions, and the specific failure mode where somebody puts a 30 amp fuse into a circuit wired for 15 because it kept blowing. A breaker cannot be over-fused that way.

Can I sell a house that still has fuses?

Yes, but expect it to come up. Home inspectors flag fuse panels as a matter of course, buyers’ agents know insurers ask about them, and the item lands on the inspection list where it becomes a negotiation. A panel change before listing removes a bargaining chip; the same work after an offer removes it under time pressure instead.

It is worth being clear that nothing legally stops the sale. What tends to happen is the buyer’s financing or insurance quote comes back with the panel named in it, and the timeline that follows is not one anybody chose.

What are the signs a panel is failing?

A panel that is warm to the touch, smells of hot plastic, buzzes, or shows rust or scorching inside the door is telling you something and it wants looking at now rather than at the weekend. Fuses that blow repeatedly on the same circuit, or breakers that will not stay reset, are a separate fault and not necessarily the panel itself.

There are also panels replaced for what they are rather than for a symptom. Certain makes from the sixties and seventies are known to insurers by name, and where one of those is found the letter tends to arrive whether or not anything has gone wrong yet.

How long is the power off, and who books the disconnect?

Plan on the house being without power for the working day. Jamie arranges the Nova Scotia Power disconnect and reconnect as part of the job, so that is not a call you have to make or a window you have to sit at home waiting for on your own account.

Practical things people wish they had thought about: what is in the freezer, whether anyone in the house works from home that day, and anything medical that plugs in. Say so when you book and the day gets planned around it rather than discovered at eight in the morning.

Does a panel change mean a service upgrade too?

Not always, and this is the distinction worth getting right before you budget. Replacing a fuse panel with a breaker panel changes the equipment. Going from 60 or 100 amps to 200 changes how much the house can draw. They often happen together because the reasons overlap, but they are two different jobs with two different prices.

If nothing new is going in and the existing service is genuinely adequate, a panel change on its own is a real option. If a heat pump, a car charger or a hot tub is anywhere in the plan, read the service upgrades page before deciding, because doing both at once costs less than doing them a year apart.

What it costs

Nova Scotia Power publishes an average. Their panel upgrade page puts a panel upgrade at about $5,000 in parts and labour, usually completed in one day. That is their figure, not a quote, and it is the most honest number publicly available for this province.

What moves it on a given house: where the mast and meter base sit and what condition they are in, whether the service size is changing as well as the panel, how much of what is landing in the new panel is in a state to be landed, and what turns up behind the old panel once it is off the wall. That is why Jamie comes and looks at a panel job first and runs the load calculation rather than pricing it on the phone.

There is no rebate for this work in Nova Scotia. See the 2026 rebates guide for what is actually open and what none of it covers.

Permits and inspection in Nova Scotia

A panel change needs a wiring permit, and a permit is only issued to an electrical contractor who is or employs a construction electrician. A homeowner cannot pull a permit for their own house here, whatever a general Canadian article tells you, and our guide to doing your own electrical work here quotes the regulation that says so.

The permit and the inspection come from Nova Scotia Power Inspection Services, acting for the province, rather than from the municipality. HRM does not issue electrical permits. Ontario’s ESA has no role in Nova Scotia at all. The work is done to the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code, which the province adopted with no amendments effective 2 July 2024.

Questions

Asked Often

How do I know whether I have a fuse box or a breaker panel?

Open the door on the grey box and look. Fuses are round screw-in plugs like small glass-topped bottles, or cartridges behind a pull-out block. Breakers are rows of small switches you can flip. If you have ever unscrewed something to restore power rather than flipping it, you have fuses.

Can I just add breakers to my existing fuse panel?

No. A fuse panel and a breaker panel are different pieces of equipment, not different settings on the same one. What people usually mean is whether the whole panel has to be replaced, and it does. What does not automatically have to change is the service size feeding it, which is a separate question.

Is there a rebate for a panel change in Nova Scotia?

No. Efficiency Nova Scotia's homeowner programmes fund heating systems, insulation, air sealing and efficient products, and a panel is none of those, even when the panel is the only reason the efficient thing is possible. Our rebates guide sets out what is actually open in 2026.

Do you take panel work outside Dartmouth?

Yes. Panel changes run across Dartmouth, Halifax, Cole Harbour, Eastern Passage and Bedford, and the rest of the Halifax Regional Municipality. The older housing on the Halifax peninsula and the sixties and seventies builds on both sides of the harbour throw up much the same panels.

  • We hired Jamie's company last year after we bought a new house. The work was to remodel the electric wiring for a large house and install a separate 30 amp panel (to make two services in the house) and convert my old oil/hotwater heating to electric. Jamie and his people did the work very professionally and their price was very fair. He took care of all the communications with NS Power inspectors and made sure the inspection went as smoothly as possible. I also find Jamie is a very honest and kind person. I trust his work. It has been over 15 years since I owned my first house and hired numerous contractors for house fixes. Jamie is the best one.

  • Really went above and beyond on my reno. Both Jamie and his apprentice were friendly, honest, neat, and knowledgeable. I'd be as happy to have them over for dinner as I would be to recommend them to friends and family.

  • I didn't end up requiring their service, but just my interactions with them over the phone, and the way Jamie immediately made room for me in a busy day was very appreciated. While one never wishes for electrical issues, I'll definitely call this company with any future issues that might crop up.
