Why Home Style Electric

Why Dartmouth Homeowners Call Him Back

Jamie started Home Style Electric in 2009 on the jobs bigger companies kept turning down — a single dead outlet, a fixture nobody could reach, a basement circuit that had never been finished properly. The company incorporated in 2011. It is still family-owned, and it still takes those jobs.

What that looks like on your job: he is not one for drawn-out estimates, so a small job gets booked in and done rather than written up. He wires to the Canadian Electrical Code or better rather than to whatever would pass. He cleans the site up before he goes, and he does not consider the job finished until you are satisfied with it.

Straight to the work
Small jobs get booked in and done rather than written up. Bigger work he comes and looks at first.
Code or better
Aluminum pigtailing is inspected by Nova Scotia Power, and you get the certificate for your insurer.
Cleaned up before he leaves
Drywall dust and offcuts are part of the job, not your problem afterwards.
You deal with Jamie directly

  • We hired Jamie's company last year after we bought a new house. The work was to remodel the electric wiring for a large house and install a separate 30 amp panel (to make two services in the house) and convert my old oil/hotwater heating to electric. Jamie and his people did the work very professionally and their price was very fair. He took care of all the communications with NS Power inspectors and made sure the inspection went as smoothly as possible. I also find Jamie is a very honest and kind person. I trust his work. It has been over 15 years since I owned my first house and hired numerous contractors for house fixes. Jamie is the best one.

  • I meet Jamie a few years back when I hired him to replace my panel before selling my house and I have been using his company ever since. Jamie and his boys good work for me every time I needed them. I have a number of rental properties and he is definitely my go-to guy when I need electricians.

  • These guys are good. I have multiple rentals and I only hire Jamie and his guys for my electrical issues. Not once they have disappointed me or my tenants.

  • Really went above and beyond on my reno. Both Jamie and his apprentice were friendly, honest, neat, and knowledgeable. I'd be as happy to have them over for dinner as I would be to recommend them to friends and family.

  • I didn't end up requiring their service, but just my interactions with them over the phone, and the way Jamie immediately made room for me in a busy day was very appreciated. While one never wishes for electrical issues, I'll definitely call this company with any future issues that might crop up.

Questions

Common Questions About Hiring an Electrician in Dartmouth

Panel upgrades, aluminum wiring and insurance letters are the three things homeowners here ask about most.

How do I know if my electrical panel needs upgrading?

Two different questions usually hide in that one. If the basement still has a fuse box, that is the panel itself, and it is what insurers and buyers ask about. If the lights dim when something big starts, or you are adding a heat pump or a car charger, that is capacity, and the answer comes from a load calculation rather than from the panel's age.

My insurance company says my house has aluminum wiring. What now?

Get their requirement in writing first, because insurers differ on whether they want remediation or a full rewire. Most accept pigtailing, done properly and then inspected and certified by Nova Scotia Power. That certificate is what you send them, and it is the part that actually closes the file.

Do you take on small jobs, or only full installations?

Small jobs are the work this company was built on and they still get booked. One dead outlet, a switch that buzzes, a fixture nobody could reach. Being based in Dartmouth is part of why it works: a single job across town is a short drive rather than an afternoon.

Small electrical jobs

Do I need a service upgrade before adding a heat pump or a hot tub?

Sometimes, and nobody can tell you from a web page. It depends on what else the house already runs, so it comes out of a load calculation. Plenty of 100 amp houses take a heat pump without trouble; the same service with electric heat, an electric range and a tank often will not.

Service upgrades and load calculations

Can I do my own electrical work in Nova Scotia?

No. A permit is required for electrical work here, and a permit can only be issued to an electrical contractor who is or employs a construction electrician. The exemptions people have heard about remove the permit, not the electrician. Nova Scotia is also not Ontario, so the ESA has no role in any of it.

What the regulation actually says

Which areas do you cover?

Dartmouth, Halifax, Cole Harbour, Eastern Passage and Bedford, plus the rest of the Halifax Regional Municipality. Dartmouth is home base and has been since 2009, which is why the smaller jobs there are still worth booking in.

Are you licensed and insured?

Jamie Myatt is a red seal journeyman electrician. The business is fully insured, carries WCB coverage and holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Founded in 2009 and incorporated in 2011.

A panel that needs replacing, a room that needs light, or the one outlet that stopped working. Describe it and Jamie will tell you what it involves — then either book it in or come and look.
